Germany is the homeland of the original Atari rockers Bodenständing 2000. I have seen their live NY concert and I have to say, I haven’t had so much fun since high school. Genuinely hilarious and human, they rap goofy songs about the computer geek existence to the background of a deep-base 8-bit Atari track, occasionally break out a flute or a tiny plastic keyboard and go all analogue.

First off, you have two Germans computer geeks that are simply hilarious, acting all wacky to the point that they’re damn nearly cuddly, but they also rocked liked crazy. So hard and heavy in fact, that at times the music made the mouse arrows on their computers move (and they were using laptops with trackpads)...
Back to the music: for the most part it was loud and angry (well, that’s no surprise since they are afterall German), but it had a nice Euro techno feel… actually, a very Euro chip feel for those who are familiar…. plus a delicate softer side at times.

Bodenstandig 2000, who performed this week at Deitch, bring terrific entertainment value to the greater but potentially somewhat boring cause of open-source, command-line principles. Combining acapella singing, furious real time keyboard playing, spastic, ironic Prodigy-style dance moves and a razor sharp ear for the nuances of various hard-pumping electronic dance genres (if only to proudly translate them into 8-bit, that is, lo fi, "chiptunes"), the duo repeatedly bowled over the audience Wednesday night. "It's very bodenstandig." Wenn Wissenschaftler Musik machen, dann erwartet man eigentlich knochentrockene, mit nahezu gichtfingriger Verkrampftheit gespielte Akkordfolgen. Oder aber von kitschiger Gefühligkeit strotzende Songs. Dass Wissenschaftler dagegen aus ihrer Rolle fallen und albern werden, ist die Ausnahme von der Regel. Das Duo Bodenständig2000 stellt diese Ausnahme dar. Im richtigen Berufsleben ist der eine Maschinenbauer, und der andere forscht über künstliche Intelligenz. Doch zusammen bilden sie eine Band, deren erste Platte "Maxi German Rave Blast Hits 3" (die übrigens auf dem renommierten britischen Label Rephlex erschienen ist!) von einer so unfassbaren Spinnertheit ist, dass Puristen vor ihren Lautsprecherboxen in Ohnmacht fallen. Souveränes Atari-Soundgeballere folgt dort direkt auf merkwürdig verzerrte Schlager, und es gehört eine amtliche Liebe zu dieser Spinnerei dazu, um die Platte heil zu durchstehen. Das Publikum in der Maria am Ostbahnhof hatte sich am vergangenen Freitag also einiges vorgenommen.....Wer nun glaubt, dass die Live-Auftritte von Bodenständig2000 an Helge Schneider erinnern, der hat Recht und irrt doch. Denn anders als bei Schneider rockt ihre Musik tatsächlich, nimmt man einmal zwei offensichtliche Technoheads und ihren ausdrucksstarken Tanz zum Maßstab. Und wenn es die Band auch erfolgreich geschafft hatte, mit ihrem über zwei Stunden dauernden Auftritt mehr als die Hälfte ihrer Zuschauer zu vertreiben, so musste sie doch - zu ihrer eigenen Verwunderung - der standhaft ausharrenden Szeneprominenz noch viele Zugaben geben. Kurz, es war wie einer der legendären Abende in der Galerie berlintokyo. Bodenständig2000 waren weder obskur, noch waren sie blöd - sie waren einfach prima lustig.

23.10.99, Sonntag: Bodenständig2000. Der Tag geht. Nur der Atomstrom zirpt zärtlich in der Steckdose. Dann setzen sich Dragan und Bernhard von Bodenständig2000 im Kinderzimmer an ihren Atari. Auf dem leuchtet in schönem Orange ein Programm namens "Bumschaktrak", vielleicht Teil der eigens von ihnen entwickelten Musiksoftware "Deluxe Mjuzakk Zerbastel Kit". Nach deren kommerziellem Scheitern haben sich die beiden Kabelfrickler entschlossen, nun eben Popstars zu werden. Ihre erste Platte mit lustig pluckernder Taschengeld-Elektronik heißt deshalb im ganz großen Stil gleich "Maxi German Rave Blast Hits 3", wurde von mehreren deutschen Elektronik-Labeln abgelehnt, ja, bis man sich bei Aphex Twins renommiertem Rephlex-Label erbarmte. Zu ausgesucht billigen Casio-Beats, TV-Samples und Maruscha-Melodien singen sie Texte wie "Wann werdet ihr endlich begreifen/ gute Musik macht man nicht nur aus Schleifen/ Wann ist es endlich vorüber/ Euer Klangkästchenschieberfieber". Das nimmt sich alles ziemlich durchgedreht schlau und wirklich lustig aus, klingt bisweilen wie Der Plan - nur dass das Bezugssystem ihres affirmativen Humors eben Rave heißt.

Die Anarchie aus der Kinderstube.....Die Online-Plattform micromusic.net, ein Ausauschort für Computermusik, gehört zu den ältesten ihrer Art. Sie ist Musiklabel, Feierabend-Bar und Spielwiese für Elektroniktüftler.....In den Liveauftritten in Basel überträgt sich diese Anarchie auf das Publikum. Natürlich vor allem auf diejenigen, die die Klänge mit der eigenen Kindheit verbinden, aber keine Sorge für die computerfrei Aufgewachsenen: Die Begeisterung ist ansteckend. Bernhard Kirsch und Dragan Espenscheid vom Duo Bodenständig 2000 waren unter den sieben Gruppen, die in Basel live auftraten. Die zwei Musiker sind überzeugt, dass der Verschmelzung von altem Computersound und neusten Musikexperimenten die Zukunft gehört: "Techno ist am Ende und unsere Musik eine echte Alternative.".....Kühne Voraussagen, aber immerhin: Der Anfang für eine breitere Rezeption ist gemacht.....

BODENSTANDIG 2000!!! They heated-up everything so much! In lots of different meanings - it was very warm to dance and romp... It was quite funny to listen how they were singing the epos about their mums or music creating ideas and it was very impressive how deeply they were playing with the flute and that childish electric synth! There were lots of people around that time. Everyone was heated, peeps were listening what two Bodenstandig 2000 guys were talking. And suddenly they said: 'Junglers and Jungletes get ready!!! It is jungle to you!' ...;) and jungle kicked-on: real jungle, with a bassline and drums, melodies. People started stamping, twisting their hands and dancing. Then Bodenstandig folks got-off the stage and started to dance and shout with the crowd! Oho!!! OOHOO! It seemed that Bodenstandig had encompassed so many electronic music culture with their show! They showed so many, that you start to love all electronic culture, - so many freedom lives there, so many ideas. For me it seems that lots of electronic music lives in their music, which was developing in Germany... They are germans... Maybe their music can even reflect human's mentalitet, i mean - cultural experience, which is a characteristic for the excact geographical place, maybe for a nation or a country... Bodenstandig had finished their show with the track 'IN ROCK 16BIT'! They played it very long with a small flute and it got us sooo high! It flooded us with the beauty... After Bodenstandig 2000, i went to another space - with sofas and computers. People were talking there, playing with computers. Very light, good people. Generally i didn't see anyone having a bottle of water in their hands. It was so fun. Muscles were tired, light, but they couldn't stay still 'cos music was feeding them everytime and it provoked to dance our hearts, brains, bones ;)
